In a recent print edition, Correio de Manha mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move to re-sign Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards. It has been stated that Spurs are hoping to bring the English wide player back to North London next year.
Edwards’ Impressive Run Of Form In Portuguese Football
Edwards has caught the eye with his performances on the right side of Sporting’s attack during this campaign. The 24-year-old has found the back of the net on three occasions and picked up three assists in 14 matches for the Portuguese outfit this season across all fronts.
The English wide player has given a good account of himself in the final third based on his average of 1.8 shots, 3.0 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after making 78.9% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top-flight (stats via whoscored).
The London-born talent is under contract at the Portuguese club until the summer of 2026. Therefore, Spurs would struggle to re-sign him on the cheap in the upcoming January transfer window.
Is Edwards A Decent Option For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Edwards is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to engineer a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third. He can even shoot the ball with venom and precision from long range.
The English talent has done well to add a few goals and assists to his game and is now well-equipped to prove his worth in the Premier League after previously failing to do so during his time at Tottenham. He is primarily a right-winger but can also function as a centre-forward if asked to do so.
Edwards would inject more firepower into Angelos Postecoglu’s attack. He is good enough to increase competition for places within Spurs‘ match-day squad. However, it remains to be seen whether he can cope with the physicality of English football.
Still, there is no denying that Edwards would be a decent option for the North London club to pursue this winter or at the end of this campaign as he might help them challenge for some major trophies over the next decade.
