In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, Sunday People chief sports writer Neil Moxley tipped Aston Villa outcast Leander Dendoncker to seal a return to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Moxley said,
“I could see Dendoncker one day returning to Wolves because I think he’s possibly got some unfinished business now. I’m not exactly sure that they’ve got cover. I think, again, though, he will have his work getting in his favourite position. I prefer him as a centre-back in the three, but he did play a long time for Wolves in midfield. He was used around Moutinho and Neves when they were in their pomp. But with Dendoncker, it would be interesting to see if Wolves could get him out with around half the money they let him go to Villa for.”
Dendoncker’s Lack Of Game Time At Aston Villa This Season
Dendoncker has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot at the West Midlands club during this campaign. The Belgian talent has featured in just eight matches for the Villans this season across all fronts.
The 28-year-old has made all of his league appearances as a substitute but has done well to complete 78.6% of his attempted passes in the Premier League (stats via whoscored).
Should Wolves Boss Gary O’Neil Bring Dendoncker Back To The Molineux Stadium?
Dendoncker is a solid tackler of the ball and can earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when needed and can shoot the ball relatively well from long range.
The Belgian talent can even set up a few promising chances for his teammates up top. He can even make a few driving runs with the ball from midfield. However, the lack of game time has halted his progress at Aston Villa.
At 28, Dendoncker is in dire need of regular game time if he wants to get his career back on track. Hence, he would welcome a return to Wolves if Gary O’Neil decides to move in for him next year.
Dendoncker already knows the Midlands club well from his previous spell with them and won’t take much time to settle into O’Neil’s brand of football. Thus, Wolves should consider bringing him back to the Molineux Stadium in 2024.
