In a recent report, Gazzetta dello Sport offered an update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. It has been revealed that Spurs are looking to cash in on the Danish midfield ace when the transfer window reopens this January.
Hojbjerg’s Solid Campaign In English Football Last Season
Hojbjerg had an impressive season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium recently after he put in a run of impressive displays at the centre of their midfield. The 28-year-old made 44 appearances for the North London club in the previous campaign, scoring five goals and picking up seven assists across all fronts. However, he has struggled to earn a regular starting spot in Angelos Postecoglu’s first team this season.
The Danish talent anchored the midfield well by averaging 1.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.7 clearances, 0.9 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after making 88.6% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Tottenham will expire in the summer of 2025. However, he is surplus to requirements at the London club and could be sold in the upcoming January transfer window.
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Cut Hojbjerg Loose This Winter?
Hojbjerg is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure possession back for his team in the middle of the park. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can even strike the ball with venom from long range.
The Denmark international is a good passer of the ball as well and can make some energetic runs with the ball from midfield. However, he can sometimes lack consistency with his contributions in the Premier League.
However, Hojbjerg has often found himself behind Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu’s pecking order. Furthermore, Spurs are likely to strengthen their squad even further this January. Hence, it makes sense for the North London giants to cut Hojbjerg loose soon and use the money generated from his potential sale to bring in a suitable replacement this winter.
