In a recent report, Fichajes stated that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino as a target. It is believed that Spurs are eyeing a move to bring the Spanish talent to North London next year.
Merino’s Decent Form In La Liga This Season
The 27-year-old has made a good start to this campaign as he has put in a run of solid performances at the heart of Real Sociedad’s midfield. Merino has picked up one assist in eight appearances for the Spanish outfit this season in all competitions.
The Spaniard has given a good account of himself at the centre of the park and deserves credit for averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.4 clearances, 0.7 shots and 1.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 79.2% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will run out in the summer of 2025. Hence, Spurs will do well to land him on a cut-price deal this winter or at the end of this campaign.
Will Merino Be A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Merino is a solid tackler of the ball and usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. He can shoot the ball with power from long range and is a good dribbler with the ball as well. However, the Spanish talent needs to find a way to add more goals to his game.
Still, there is no denying Merino’s quality and versatility. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a defensive midfielder if needed.
We can expect the Spaniard to add more bite and steel to Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu’s midfield. He would also serve as a decent replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who is facing an uncertain future at the North London club.
All in all, Merino would be an excellent choice for Spurs to consider next year. At 27, he is about to enter his prime and could help Tottenham compete across all fronts in the coming years. Thus, Postecoglu should think about moving in for the Real Sociedad star soon.
