In a recent report, Sport revealed that Newcastle United are keen on recruiting Bayer 04 Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz. It has been stated that the Magpies are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the German sensation.
Wirtz’s Good Vein Of Form In German Football This Season
Wirtz is enjoying a decent campaign at the Bundesliga club after he put in a series of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 20-year-old has featured in ten matches for Leverkusen this season, netting three goals and grabbing four assists in all competitions.
The German playmaker has been a consistent performer in the opposition half based on his average of 2.0 shots, 3.0 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per game in Bundesliga. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball as he completed 83.1% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at Leverkusen will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for Newcastle to snap him up next year.
Is Wirtz A Good Option For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Wirtz is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball in the opposition half. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third and can even shoot the ball with venom from long range.
The German sensation is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also operate as a right-winger or as a secondary striker up top if needed.
Wirtz will bring more quality and depth to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s squad. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting place at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons. Thus, the Magpies should focus on getting a deal done for the Leverkusen star next year.
At 20, Wirtz has the potential to become a future star in Premier League football. Hence, he would be a great option for the Tyneside club to pursue in the long run. However, only time will tell whether Wirtz can maintain his good form in English football.
Still, Wirtz’s ceiling is quite high which makes him a worthy target for Newcastle to acquire this January or next summer.
