In a recent column for the Daily Briefing, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Newcastle United are eager to land Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are eyeing a move to sign the Spanish talent but could face competition from Manchester United in pursuit of him.
Guerra’s Impressive Rise In La Liga
The 20-year-old is enjoying a decent campaign at the Spanish club as he has put in a handful of eye-catching displays at the heart of their midfield. Guerra has banged in three goals and grabbed one assist in nine appearances for Valencia this season across various competitions.
The Valencia-born talent has proven himself to be a valuable performer in the middle of the park based on his average of 1.0 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 1.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. However, he needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution from midfield after completing 72.4% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Valencia will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Newcastle will have to make a good offer if they want to recruit Guerra next year.
What Will Guerra Add To Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe’s Side?
Guerra is a good tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can even chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals up top.
The Spaniard is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play as a holding midfielder if required. However, he has to find a way to improve his passing accuracy.
We can expect Guerra to add more quality and depth to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s midfield department.
At 20, Guerra has got the potential to become a future star in European football. Therefore, the Magpies will do well to lure him to St. James’ Park this January or at the end of this season. However, only time will tell whether Guerra can make a smooth transition to life in England.
