In a recent report, The Athletic stated that Everton were showing interest in Southampton midfielder Shea Charles last summer. It is believed that Toffees were eyeing a move to land the Manchester-born talent before he decided to join the Saints.
Charles’ Impressive Form At St. Mary’s Stadium
Charles is enjoying a solid campaign in the EFL Championship as he has put in a series of impressive performances at the centre of Southampton’s midfield. The 19-year-old has been involved in ten matches for the Saints this season in multiple competitions.
The gifted teenager has anchored the midfield well by averaging 1.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.6 clearances per 90 minutes in the English Championship. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after completing 88% of his attempted passes in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Southampton will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Everton will have to make a convincing offer if they decide to reignite their interest in the talented youngster next summer.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Go Back For Charles?
Charles is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the front foot.
Charles is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a central defender or as a right-back if told to do so by his manager. The Northern Irish whizkid is a tidy passer of the ball as well but needs to find a way to be more productive going forward.
At the moment, Charles is enjoying his life at Southampton. Hence, it won’t be easy for Everton head coach Sean Dyche to lure him away from the St. Mary’s Stadium at the end of this campaign.
Still, there is no denying Charles’ potential as he has the makings of a top talent. Dyche would fancy his chances of unlocking the best out of the youngster at Goodison Park in the long run. All in all, the Merseyside club should consider going back in for Charles next summer, especially if he continues to impress during this 2023-24 EFL Championship campaign.
