According to a report from Metro, Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, is eager to depart from the club during the January transfer window following his unsuccessful attempt to join Manchester United last summer.
Cucurella had been heavily associated with a loan transfer to Old Trafford earlier this summer, as Manchester United sought to secure a temporary left-back due to Luke Shaw’s injury. However, this potential move eventually collapsed due to various factors, leading United to instead sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham.
Cucurella’s Continuing Struggles With Chelsea This Season
Cucurella joined Chelsea in a £62m deal from Brighton last summer but the Spaniard has endured a tough spell Stamford Bridge. Under the guidance of the new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, he has yet to make an appearance in the Premier League this season. His sole outing during the current campaign occurred in the Carabao Cup, contributing to a 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon.
The Spaniard made 32 appearances for the Blues last season where he only managed to produce two assists across all fronts. Although he remained solid defensively, the lack of productivity in the final third raised questions about his ability to contribute to Chelsea’s attack.
Cucurella’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in the summer of 2028. Hence, the West London club will be demanding a significant transfer sum to sanction his exit if they wish to sell him to any potential suitors.
Will Pochettino Sanction His Exit In January?
Cucurella, primarily a left-back renowned for his attacking flair, possesses adept dribbling and passing skills, along with a proficiency in delivering precise crosses into the penalty area. Despite these attributes, he has fallen short of expectations in terms of offensive productivity during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Furthermore, Cucurella is a dependable defender, displaying strength in tackling and a keen ability to read the game. His presence would undoubtedly bolster the defensive capabilities of any potential suitors.
At 25 years of age, Cucurella remains in the early stages of his career and holds significant potential to establish himself as a premier left-back. However, his diminished role at Chelsea has left him with limited options, and as a result, he may seek an exit.
