In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo stated that Barcelona are monitoring Bayer 04 Leverkusen youngster Florian Wirtz. It has been stated that the Catalan club are eyeing a move to secure the services of the German talent.
Wirtz’s Impressive Campaign In The Bundesliga So Far
Wirtz has enjoyed a good run of form at the German club during this campaign as he has put in a series of impressive displays in the final third. The 20-year-old has found the back of the net on three occasions and grabbed four assists in ten matches for Bayer Leverkusen this season across all fronts.
The German talent has been a decent performer in the opponent’s half based on his average of 2.0 shots, 3.0 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing possession in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 83.1% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club will expire in the summer of 2027. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Barcelona to sign him on the cheap next year.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Snap Wirtz Up?
Wirtz is a good dribbler with the ball and can make a few promising chances for his teammates on the attacking third of the pitch. He can strike the ball with venom and precision from long range and is a tidy passer as well.
The talented starlet is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also play as a box-to-box midfielder or as a right-sided wide player if asked to do so.
We can expect Wirtz to bring more goals and creativity to Barcelona head coach Xavi’s frontline. At such a tender age, he has already begun to prove his worth in German football and would be a great signing for the Catalan club in the long run.
Wirtz has what it takes to be a success story at the Nou Camp in the future as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in Spain. At 20, he has the potential to become one of the best players in his position someday. Thus, Xavi would be wise to try everything in his power to snap Wirtz up in 2024.
