According to a report from Football.London, Chelsea and Tottenham, two Premier League clubs, are already considering making a move for the Brentford striker, Ivan Toney. Additionally, the forward himself has suggested that Arsenal and Liverpool could also be potential destinations.
The West London club has deemed Toney as a potential target for January and with the likes of Tottenham still looking for a replacement for Harry Kane, it appears that a Winter transfer battle might be on the horizon.
Toney’s Ban Following The Betting Scandal
The 27-year-old faced 232 betting charges and received an eight-month suspension from the FA, which concluded on January 14, 2023. Ivan Toney is now poised to become the focal point of an astonishing January transfer battle, as his ban for breaching betting regulations is set to conclude in the first month of 2024. The player himself has hinted at a possible departure from Brentford in the near future.
According to the report in Football.London, in August, he remarked, ‘I don’t let this affect me,’ when referring to his ban. ‘Certainly, it will linger in the background, but my primary focus is to continue training diligently whenever I have the opportunity. During matches, my aim is to keep scoring and performing at a high level. However, I believe that everyone aspires to compete at the highest level.’
He continued when asked about the possibility of an exit from Brentford, ‘It’s not that Brentford isn’t a great club, but I believe that playing for a major club, contending for trophies, and pursuing such ambitions are something everyone desires. If the opportunity were to arise, I think it would be unwise for me not to explore it further.’
Will The Chelsea Boss Mauricio Pochettino Move In For Him In January?
The Blues have spent a fortune in the summer transfer window but unfortunately still lack depth in the attacking department. Christopher Nkunku was brought to Stamford Bridge in the hopes of solving the goal scoring issues but the former RB Leipzig forward has sustained a knee injury and remains sidelined for the long term. The West London club already seem to be struggling without him even though Nicolas Jackson has provided some much needed cover.
With the need for a number nine very evident, it is very likely for Mauricio Pochettino to move in for Ivan Toney post the international break in January. He has all the attributes to be a top player, including pace, power, and finishing ability. He is also a good passer and dribbler, which makes him a complete attacking threat.
