In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, transfer insider Dean Jones mentioned that West Ham United have identified Bayer 04 Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah as a target. Jones said,
“It seems like one they have genuine possibilities around in terms of getting it done and with other options being knocked down recently it makes sense that this one now gathers pace.
“This is a player they have tracked for years so there is not much risk involved. I think it would do a lot for the vibe of the fan base to get a player through the door soon and someone like Tah would be a positive start.
“We know Moyes has some reservations around this one and that he really desires new signings who have Premier League experience, yet of the players they are looking at from outside of England right now I have heard that Tah is at least someone Moyes is a little more open-minded about.”
Tah’s Good Run Of Form In German Football Last Season
The 27-year-old experienced a solid campaign at Leverkusen as he put in a string of impressive performances at the heart of their defence. Tah participated in 47 matches for the German outfit last season, netting one goal in multiple competitions.
The Hamburg-born sensation was a consistent performer when defending inside his half based on his average of 0.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He was even careful when distributing possession from the back after making 89.1% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
Tah’s current contract at Leverkusen will run out in the summer of 2025. Therefore, the Hammers would need to launch a big-money offer if they want to recruit Tah during this summer transfer window.
Is Tah A Decent Choice For West Ham United?
Tah is a decent tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can use his robust 1.95m frame to win his fair share of aerial duels.
We can expect Tah to inject more bite and steel into West Ham head coach David Moyes’ defence. At 27, he is currently playing some of the best football of his playing career which makes him an excellent choice for the Hammers this summer.
Tah could help the East London club compete for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season. Hence, Moyes should focus on signing him this summer.
