In a recent report, The Evening Standard mentioned that West Ham United are well-positioned to recruit Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen this summer. It has been stated that the Hammers are eyeing a move to land the Dutch defender in this ongoing transfer window.
Maatsen’s Excellent Loan Spell At Burnley
Maatsen enjoyed a decent loan spell at Burnley in the previous campaign when he produced several impressive displays on the left side of their defence. The Dutch whizkid made 42 appearances for the Clarets last season, scoring four times and earning six assists in various competitions.
The 21-year-old caught the eye at both ends of the field based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the English Championship. He was even excellent when distributing possession from the left flank as evidenced by his pass success rate of 83.5% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Chelsea will run out at the end of next season. Hence, the Hammers could potentially land him for a reduced fee this summer.
Is Maatsen A Good Option For West Ham United?
Maatsen is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and can create a few meaningful chances for his teammates from the left flank.
The Dutch defensive ace can also make a few decent runs with the ball and can strike the ball with venom from long range. He is primarily a left-back but can also operate as a left-winger if asked to do so.
Maatsen would undeniably inject more quality and depth into West Ham‘s backline. He might even help David Moyes‘ team compete across all fronts over the next few seasons.
At 21, the future looks quite promising for Maatsen as long as he continues to improve with each year. Hence, he would be an excellent, long-term option for the Hammers to pursue in this off-season. However, it remains to be seen whether the Dutch sensation can maintain his good form in the Premier League.
