In a recent report, The Times (subscription required) stated that West Ham United are showing interest in Liverpool ace Joe Gomez this summer. It has been claimed that the Hammers are eyeing a move to bring the English defensive ace to the London Stadium this month.
Gomez’s Impressive Form At Anfield Last Season
Gomez enjoyed a solid campaign at Liverpool last season but failed to help the Reds secure a top-four finish in the Premier League. The 26-year-old participated in 31 matches for the Merseyside giants in the previous campaign, picking up one assist in multiple competitions.
The English sensation was a decent performer at the back based on his average of 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 2.2 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He even distributed possession with conviction from inside his half as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 86.6% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Liverpool will expire in the summer of 2027. Thus, West Ham United would have to make a convincing offer if they want to lure Gomez to the English capital during this summer transfer period.
Will Gomez Be A Decent Option For West Ham United Boss David Moyes?
Gomez is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and is proficient at playing his way out from the back.
The English talent mainly operates as a central defender but can also fill in as a right-back if needed. Gomez will add more bite and steel to West Ham boss David Moyes’ defensive department.
The Liverpool talent is good enough to fight for a regular first-team spot at the London Stadium this season. Thus, he would be a great option for the Hammers to consider this summer as long as they can get him on board for a fair price.
There are some concerns over Gomez’s injury record as he has missed a lot of high-profile matches during his Liverpool career. However, at 26, he is about to enter his prime which makes him a worthy target for the East London club to pursue before the end of this month.
