In a recent report, Foot Mercato mentioned that West Ham United are facing stiff competition for Montpellier ace Elye Wahi this summer. It has been stated that the Hammers will have to rival Eintracht Frankfurt in the race to land the French centre-forward.
Wahi’s Impressive Numbers In Ligue 1 Last Season
Wahi managed to produce a series of productive displays for Montpellier on the attacking end of the field last season. The French talent managed to catch the eye by netting 19 goals and picking up six assists in 33 matches for his current employers in the previous campaign in multiple competitions.
The 20-year-old led the line for the French club by averaging 1.9 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in Ligue 1 football. However, he was a bit careless when distributing possession in the final third after completing 70.7% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Wahi is under contract at the French club until the summer of 2025. Thus, it won’t be easy for West Ham to get a deal done for him before the end of this month.
West Ham United Are Facing Stiff Competition For Wahi: Is He Worth The Fight?
Wahi excels at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in on target. The French talent can be a streaky goal-getter in the final third when he is playing well on the pitch. He can even create a few decent openings for others around him in the opposition half but needs to work on improving his link-up play in the final third.
Wahi is primarily a centre-forward but can also function as a right-sided wide player if told to do so. Someone with his skillset will no doubt give West Ham boss David Moyes more options up top.
Wahi is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at the London Stadium this season and could serve as an ideal replacement for Gianluca Scamacca at the East London club. With all things considered, the French striker will be well worth the fight for the Hammers as they look to build a strong squad for the future.
