In a recent report, The Evening Standard offered an update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence. It is believed that Spurs have decided to entertain offers for the English full-back during this summer transfer period.
Spence’s Lackluster Spell In North London
Spence has struggled to prove his worth at the North London club after joining from Rennes last summer. He made just six senior appearances for Spurs last season but failed to find the back of the net or assist a goal for them in all competitions.
The 22-year-old went back on loan at Rennes where he had a solid few months before returning to Tottenham earlier this summer.
Spence’s current deal at the North London club will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, Angelos Postecoglu is under no immediate pressure to cash in on him.
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Let Spence Go?
Spence is a good tackler of the ball and can earn the ball back for his team inside his half when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the pitch. He can even make some driving runs with the ball. However, things have not fallen in place for him during his time at Tottenham. Thus, it is only fair to the player if Angelos Postecoglu allows him to leave during this summer transfer window.
Spence is primarily a right-back but can also fill in as a right-sided wide player if told to do so by his manager. However, he is currently surplus to requirements at the North London club and is not guaranteed a regular starting spot in Postecoglu’s first XI next season.
Spence can definitely benefit from a change of scenery this summer as he looks to get his career back on track. All in all, Tottenham should focus on letting him leave before the end of this transfer period and use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of their match-day squad.
At 22, Spence has still got a bright future ahead of him. However, he needs to ensure regular first-team opportunities to mature as a footballer. Hence, it is only logical for him to be sold by Tottenham this summer.
