Alonso’s Important Role At The Nou Camp Last Season
Alonso enjoyed a decent campaign at Barcelona recently as he served as an important member of their squad. The Spanish sensation registered three goals in 37 matches for the Catalan outfit last season on all fronts.
The 32-year-old was a useful presence in Barca’s squad based on his average of 0.6 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the back after completing 90.9% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Nou Camp will expire next summer. Hence, it makes sense for Xavi to cash in on Alonso this month or else risk losing him as a free agent at the end of this campaign.
What Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Do With Regards To Alonso?
Alonso is a decent tackler of the ball and can make some crucial interceptions for his side when he is playing well on the pitch. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and excels at playing his way out from the back.
Barcelona boss Xavi has often used the Spaniard as a central defender but he can also operate as a left-back if asked to do so by his manager. Hence, he could serve as an essential member of Barca‘s match-day squad this season. The Spain international has got a wealth of experience in European football and knows Xavi’s playing style quite well.
At 32, Alonso might have one good season left in him to play at a high level. Thus, the Catalan club should consider keeping hold of him for another season before letting him leave on a free transfer next summer.
Another option for Xavi would be to cash in on Alonso and use the money generated from his potential sale to bring in a younger replacement before the end of this transfer window.
