In a recent report, Fichajes stated that Newcastle United have set their sights on Bayer 04 Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz this summer. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are hoping to seal a move for the German attacker ahead of the new campaign.
Wirtz’s Impressive Form In German Football Last Season
Wirtz proved his worth at times with his performances for the German club last season. The 20-year-old banged in four goals and earned eight assists in 25 matches for Leverkusen in the previous campaign across various competitions.
The Pulheim-born talent was a decent performer in the final third based on his average of 2.3 key passes and 2.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He was even tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after completing 78.5% of his attempted passes in the German first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Magpies to land him on the cheap in this ongoing transfer window.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Move In For Wirtz?
Wirtz is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. He has got the vision to engineer a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third.
The German talent can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals on the attacking end of the pitch. He is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a right-sided wide player or as a secondary striker if told to do so.
We can expect Wirtz to bring more goals and creativity to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe‘s frontline. He has what it takes to help the Magpies compete across all fronts in the coming years.
At 20, Wirtz has got the potential to become a future star at the highest level. Therefore, Howe would be wise to move in for him during this summer transfer period. However, there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football if the Tyneside club manage to get him on board this summer.
