According to a report from Mirror, Manchester United are on the verge of finalising a one-year contract with experienced centre-back Jonny Evans. The agreement is in its closing stages, marking a potential remarkable comeback for Evans to Old Trafford.
The Northern Ireland native initially began his career at United and later departed the club on a permanent basis in 2015. Following his departure from Leicester, Evans is currently a free agent, positioning himself for a return to the club where he started his football journey.
Evans’ Decent Campaign For Leicester City Last Season
Jonny Evans had a decent season with Leicester City in the 2022/23 season. The Northern Ireland international was a key part of the Foxes’ defence, even though they were relegated at the end.
Evans made 13 appearances in the Premier League, starting all but one of them. He was a rock at the back, making 1.0 tackles, 3.8 clearances and 1.4 interceptions per game. He was also tidy with his ball distribution after completing 87.5% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
What Will He Bring To Manchester United?
As a seasoned player with years of top-level experience, Evans can provide much-needed leadership and a calming presence in the defense. His familiarity with the club’s culture and expectations could also positively influence younger players.
Evans’s aerial prowess could make him a valuable asset during attacking and defensive set-pieces. His ability to win aerial duels could contribute to both scoring goals and preventing them.
Evans is known for his solid defensive qualities, including positioning, anticipation, and tackling. He could help shore up United’s backline and add stability to the defence, contributing to a more organised and resolute defensive unit. However, with immense competition in the centre-back positions Evans would provide much needed cover from the bench. Erik ten Hag has done well to close in on him and bring him to Old Trafford as he would certainly add more depth to the defensive department.
