According to a report from The Sun, the Sky Sport reporter Florian Plettenberg has informed that Manchester City keeper Stefan Ortega is on the radar of Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga outfit are currently facing a challenging situation regarding their goalkeepers, as Manuel Neuer remains sidelined due to injury, and Yann Sommer has left for Inter Milan.
The City Keeper possesses Bundesliga familiarity, having played 67 matches in the league for Arminia Bielefeld until their relegation in the 2021/22 season. However, Pep Guardiola is hesitant about the prospect of losing his second-choice shot-stopper without securing a suitable replacement.
Ortega’s Campaign With Manchester City Last Season
Stefan Ortega Moreno made a big impression in his debut season with Man City, keeping nine clean sheets in 14 appearances. The 30-year-old German goalkeeper joined City on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld in the summer of 2022 and was initially expected to play second fiddle to Ederson. However, he quickly established himself as a reliable option between the sticks, making several important saves in City’s run to the Premier League title, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Ortega’s most notable performance came in the FA Cup final against Manchester United, where he made a string of saves to help City to a 3-1 victory. He also played a key role in City’s Champions League campaign, keeping a clean sheet in the group stage draw against Borussia Dortmund.
Can Guardiola Afford To Lose Him ?
Pep Guardiola cannot afford to lose Stefan Ortega as his second choice goalkeeper. Ederson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but he is also prone to injury. If Ederson were to get injured, Ortega would be the only other senior goalkeeper available to Guardiola. This would leave the Sky Blues with a major weakness in goal, and it could cost them points in the Premier League and Champions League. In addition, Ortega has shown that he is a capable goalkeeper in his own right.
Asked about the links, Guardiola said: “It’ll be a problem, for his quality.”He’s played in the Bundesliga, I saw him and said, ‘What a keeper we have’. “We don’t want to sell him, but like many cases, [it depends on] three parties…”If Stefan has two weeks out of the market, we have to pick up a keeper, it’s not easy. We want him for years and years…”
