In a recent report, The Guardian mentioned that Everton are leading the race to land Manchester United ace Harry Maguire this summer. It has been revealed that the Toffees are eyeing a move to land the English defender.
Maguire’s Limited Playing Time At Old Trafford
Maguire played a sporadic role in Erik ten Hag’s squad last season when he struggled to nail down a regular starting spot at Old Trafford. The 30-year-old made 31 appearances for the Red Devils in the previous campaign, receiving nine yellow cards in multiple competitions.
The Sheffield-born talent saw a lot of his game time come off the bench which could be why he averaged 0.5 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back after making 85.4% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Mancunian club is set to run out in the summer of 2025. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Toffees to sign him on the cheap in this off-season.
Is Maguire A Good Choice For Everton Boss Sean Dyche?
Maguire can time his tackles well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front ball and is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.94m, Maguire can use his robust frame to win a few 50-50 duels in the air. However, he has struggled to find consistency with his performances in recent seasons.
Still, we can expect the English talent to add more bite and steel to Everton boss Sean Dyche’s defence. He might even help the Toffees stay out of relegation trouble in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
At 30, Maguire has still got a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Thus, it is only logical for Dyche to move in for him as he would be a good choice for the Merseyside club in the short term. However, Everton should only consider recruiting him if they can get him on board for a fair price this summer.
