In a recent report, Sport claimed that Barcelona winger Ansu Fati is on the radar of Liverpool this summer. It has been stated that the Reds have identified the Spanish speedster as a target and could make a move to sign him from the Catalan club if they lose Mohamed Salah in this transfer window.
Fati’s Important Role At The Nou Camp Last Season
Fati was a valuable member of Barca’s squad last season but struggled to earn regular starts in La Liga. The Spanish talent registered ten goals and four assists in 51 matches for the Catalan giants in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The 20-year-old made most of his appearances off the bench but did well to average 1.7 shots and 0.6 dribbles per game in La Liga football. He even distributed the ball well in the opponent’s half after making 84.8% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Barcelona will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Xavi has no immediate need to cash in on him this month.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Cut Fati Loose This Summer?
Fati can use his pace to cause a lot of headaches for his marker out on the flanks. He is a decent dribbler with the ball and usually generates a lot of power with his shot attempts. The Spanish prospect is a tidy passer of the ball as well but needs to find a way to be more decisive in the final third. He is primarily a left-winger but can also function as a right-sided wide player or play as a centre-forward if asked to do so by his manager.
Fati remains a real asset in Xavi‘s match-day squad due to his impact off the bench. However, Barcelona cannot afford to start him regularly in La Liga unless he can find a way to be more productive up top.
At the moment, Barca would be wise to not cut Fati loose unless they can bring in a suitable replacement for him before the end of this summer transfer window. At 20, the Spanish whizkid has the potential to become a success story at the Nou Camp in the long run.
