In a recent report, Sport claimed that Barcelona are optimistic about their chances to land Manchester City ace Joao Cancelo this summer. It has been revealed that the Catalan club are eager to seal a move for the Portugal international before the end of this month.
Cancelo’s Decent Run Of Form At Bayern Munich
The 29-year-old enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Bayern Munich in the previous campaign as he managed to put in a string of decent displays for them on the right flank. Cancelo found the back of the net once and secured six assists in 21 appearances for the German outfit last season on all fronts.
The Man City sensation managed to prove his worth as a reliable performer in both halves by averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.9 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per game in Bundesliga. He even took care of the ball when distributing possession from the right flank after making 85.1% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Cancelo’s current contract at Man City will run out in 2027 which could make it tough for Barcelona to get him on board in this summer transfer window.
Is Cancelo The Right Fit For Barcelona Boss Xavi?
Cancelo is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to secure possession back for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can even make a few driving runs with the ball out in the wide areas.
The Portuguese talent can strike the ball purely and with power from long range and has got the vision to create some decent chances in the final third.
We can expect Cancelo to add more quality to Barcelona head coach Xavi’s frontline. He might even help the Catalan club challenge for a few major trophies in the coming seasons.
Hence, Cancelo would be a great fit for Barca‘s needs at the moment as he has what it takes to nail down a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp. All in all, Xavi would be wise to focus all his attention to recruit the Man City star before the end of this transfer window.
