Barcelona Are Hoping To Sign This Man City Full-Back On Loan: Decent Choice For Xavi?

In a recent report, Sport mentioned that Barcelona are hoping to sign Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo on loan this summer. It has been claimed that the Catalan club are eyeing a loan move to recruit the Portuguese wide player in this off-season.

Cancelo’s Decent Loan Spell At Bayern Munich Last Season

Cancelo experienced a solid loan spell at Bayern Munich in the previous campaign when he was responsible for putting in a string of eye-catching displays for them on the right flank. The Portugal international scored one goal and picked up six assists in 21 appearances for the Bavarian club last season across all fronts.

The 29-year-old was a decent performer in the final third as he averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.9 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per game in Bundesliga football. He has even been careful when distributing the ball from the right flank based on his pass completion rate of 85.1% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Cancelo is under contract at the Mancunian club until the summer of 2027. Thus, Barcelona would have to make a decent offer if they want to sign the Portuguese right-back on loan during this summer transfer period.

Is Cancelo A Decent Choice For Barcelona?

Cancelo is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when required and is a good dribbler with the ball out on the flanks.

The Portuguese sensation has got the vision to make a few killer passes in the opponent’s half and can shoot the ball purely from long range. He mainly operates as a right-back but can also operate as a left-back if required.

Cancelo will bring more quality and depth to Barcelona‘s defence. He is good enough to earn a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp next season. Thus, Xavi would be wise to arrange a loan move for Cancelo this summer as he would be a decent choice for them in this off-season.
