In a recent report, The Athletic revealed that West Ham United are showing interest in Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen this summer. It has been claimed that the Hammers are eyeing a move to secure the services of the Dutch left-back ahead of the new campaign.
Maatsen’s Impressive Loan Spell At Burnley Last Season
Maatsen enjoyed a decent loan spell at Burnley last season when he put in a lot of impressive displays for them on the left flank. The 21-year-old featured in 42 matches for the Clarets in the previous campaign, netting four goals and grabbing six assists in multiple competitions.
The Dutch youngster was a positive influence at both ends of the field as he averaged 2.0 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the EFL Championship. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the left wing after making 83.5% of his attempted passes in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Chelsea will run out at the end of next season. Hence, West Ham could potentially land him on a cut-price deal this summer.
Is Maatsen A Decent Choice For West Ham United?
Maatsen is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to earn the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears the danger when needed and has got the vision to create a few decent chances in the final third.
The Dutch whizkid can even make a few driving runs with the ball on the left flank. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need time to settle into life in Premier League football.
Maatsen would undeniably be a great addition to West Ham boss David Moyes‘ squad. He has what it takes to serve as an ideal, long-term replacement for Aaron Cresswell at the London Stadium.
At 21, Maatsen has the potential to become one of the best players in his position someday. Therefore, the Dutch prospect would be an excellent choice for the East London club to consider during this summer transfer window as long as they can get him for the right price.
