In a recent report, The Sun offered an update on Tottenham Hotspur and their pursuit of Blackburn Rovers ace Ashley Phillips. It is understood that Spurs would have to pay £9.45m to land the English defender this summer.
Phillips’ Impressive Rise In English Football
Phillips did well to break out as a first-team starter at Blackburn last season when he managed to put in a few solid displays on the defensive end of the field. The 18-year-old has played in 14 senior matches for the English club so far but is still waiting to score his first goal for them across all competitions.
The talented teenager was a rock at the back as he averaged 0.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per 90 minutes in the EFL Championship. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from inside his half based on his pass completion rate of 82.9% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Blackburn will run out in the summer of 2025. Therefore, Spurs won’t have any choice but to meet the Championship outfit’s demands for their prized asset.
What Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Do With Regards To Phillips?
Phillips is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to earn possession back for his side inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.
At 18, the English talent has got the potential to become a future star in Premier League football. Hence, Spurs boss Angelos Postecoglu would be wise to meet Blackburn’s demands so that he can lure the gifted teenager to the North London club this summer.
Phillips will only get better as he matures as a footballer and would be a great, long-term acquisition for Tottenham this summer.
