In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano offered an update on Aston Villa and their pursuit of Bayer 04 Leverkusen ace Moussa Diaby. Romano said,
“So this is a concrete possibility for Aston Villa and I expect them to try once again for Diaby.
“So expect their new bid probably this week, but if not, they will move on. Jeremy Doku is one of their other options.”
Diaby’s Decent Season At The BayArena
The 24-year-old experienced an impressive campaign at Leverkusen after he produced a series of productive displays for them in the final third. Diaby scored 14 goals and picked up 11 assists in 48 matches for the German club last season across various competitions.
The French talent gave a good account of himself in the opponent’s half as he averaged 2.4 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game in Bundesliga football. He even distributed the ball with conviction after completing 79.2% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
Diaby’s current deal at the BayArena will expire in 2025. Hence, the Villans would have to orchestrate a sizable offer if they are serious about signing the French attacker during this summer transfer period.
Is Diaby The Right Fit For Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery?
Diaby can use his quickness to make a few dangerous runs with the ball out in the wide areas. He can shoot the ball purely and with venom from long range and has got the vision to engineer a few inviting chances with his teammates in the final third.
At the moment, Diaby is playing at the top of his game. Hence, he would be a great acquisition for the Villans if they can get a deal done for him before the start of the new season.
Diaby will inject more pace and goals into Unai Emery‘s attack and could help the West Midlands club push for a top-half finish in the 2022-23 Premier League campaign. However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical side of English football.
