In a recent report, The Athletic stated that Tottenham Hotspur remain confident about signing Blackburn Rovers ace Ashley Phillips this summer. It has been revealed that Spurs would have to pay £5m plus £4.5m in add-ons to land the English centre-back in this off-season.
Phillips’ Decent Run Of Form In Premier League Football
The 18-year-old managed to break out as a first-team starter at Ewood Park last season when he produced a handful of solid defensive performances at the back. Phillips participated in 14 senior matches for Blackburn so far but is still net his first goal for them in all competitions.
The gifted youngster proved to be a capable defender inside his half as he averaged 0.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per game in the EFL Championship. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the back based on his pass success rate of 82.9% in the English second tier (stats via whoscored).
Phillips is under contract at the English club until the summer of 2025. Thus, it will be difficult for Spurs to land him on a cut-price deal in this off-season.
Is Phillips A Decent Option For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Phillips is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make some timely interceptions for his team. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can play his way out from the back.
We can expect the English talent to inject more bite and steel into Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s defence.
At 18, Phillips has the potential to become a future star in English football. Therefore, he would be a decent, long-term option for the North London club to consider during this summer transfer period. However, only time will tell whether Phillips can maintain his good form in Premier League football if Tottenham manage to get him on board soon.
