In a recent report, The Telegraph stated that Newcastle United are hoping to land Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan this summer. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are eyeing a move to sign the English midfield ace on loan in this ongoing transfer window.
Phillips’ Limited Role In Premier League Football
Phillips played a sporadic role in Pep Guardiola’s match-day squad in the previous campaign as he struggled to nail down a regular starting spot for Man City in the Premier League. The 27-year-old participated in 21 matches for the Mancunian club last season but failed to find the back of the net or create a goal for them across various competitions.
The English talent is in dire need of securing more playing time if he wants to get his career back on track in English football. Thus, Newcastle could be an ideal loan destination for him during this summer transfer period.
His current contract at Man City will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, the Magpies have no option but to sign him on loan later this year.
Will Phillips Be A Good Signing For Newcastle United?
Phillips is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to earn the ball back for his side inside his half. He is full of energy and running at the centre of the park but has to figure out a way to earn more first-team chances in the coming seasons.
The English sensation is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a central defender if told to do so by his manager. However, there are some concerns over his long-term fitness.
We can expect Phillips to bring more bite and steel to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s midfield department. He will no doubt increase competition for places within the Tyneside club‘s squad.
At 27, Phillips is about to enter his prime and would make an immediate impact at St. James’ Park if Newcastle can manage to sign him on loan in this off-season.
