According to a report from Mirror, Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has received an opportunity to relocate to Saudi Arabia during the upcoming summer transfer window. However, the 32-year-old midfielder is currently inclined to remain with Liverpool.
With a contract that extends until June 2024, the Reds are allegedly content with the prospect of losing him on a free transfer in a year. Although Thiago has already turned down one lucrative offer, he continues to generate ‘serious interest’ from other parties.
Thiago’s Underwhelming Campaign With Liverpool Last Season
Thiago had an underwhelming spell with the Red in the previous campaign as he struggled to catch the eye for them in the Premier League. The 32-year-old failed to be productive for the Merseyside club owing to injuries and only made 21 appearances last season across multiple competitions.
Still, the Spanish sensation deserves praise for averaging 1.2 dribbles, 0.9 shots, 2.4 tackles and 1.2 interceptions and 0.7 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 86.5% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Klopp Sanction His Exit?
Thiago remains an integral part of the Merseyside club; however, his age is undoubtedly a crucial consideration when assessing the impact of his potential departure. At 32, he is entering the later stages of his career, and his ability to consistently perform at the highest level may be called into question. Losing a player with such a wealth of experience and technical skills could leave a void in Liverpool’s midfield, as his composure and vision have often been assets to the team.
The Spanish veteran struggled to find his rhythm due to injuries and disrupted match fitness. As a result, his influence on games was limited, and he failed to showcase his full potential last season. However, it is essential to acknowledge that a fresh start and improved fitness could potentially see a resurgence in his performance.
The Anfield club boasts a range of midfield options, including Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. However, it is worth noting that this group of players are relatively experienced but also ageing.
In an effort to rejuvenate their midfield, the Reds have made additions such as Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer. Nonetheless, Thiago could potentially serve as an excellent mentor and understudy to these young talents, providing valuable guidance and experience as they develop within the team. Hence, it is no surprise that Jurgen Klopp has agreed to lose him on a free transfer next summer.
