In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Monaco defender Axel Disasi is open to joining Newcastle United this summer. Romano said,
“They are waiting to understand how much Monaco really want for Axel Disasi. This is the crucial step of this story because, on the player’s side, he is open to making the move to Newcastle or Manchester United.
“He wants to try this Premier League opportunity in a very clear way, so let’s see how the conversation will go with Monaco.
“But Disasi and Barnes, of course in a different position, are two important targets for Newcastle.”
Disasi’s Decent Run Of Form At The Stade Louis-II
Disasi had a solid season at the French club as he was responsible for putting in a string of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the pitch. The 25-year-old found the back of the net on six occasions and secured four assists in 49 matches for Monaco in various competitions.
The French centre-half was a solid presence when defending inside his half based on his average of 0.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 2.9 clearances per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even been careful when distributing possession from the back as evidenced by his pass success rate of 83.8% in the top tier of French football (stats via whoscored).
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Disasi This Summer?
Disasi is a decent tackler of the ball and can scan the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when required and can chip in by scoring his fair share of goals at the other end of the field.
The Frenchmen excels at playing his way out from the back. However, he is still unproven at the highest level and might need time to adapt to Newcastle‘s playing style if Eddie Howe opts to move in for him this summer.
At 25, Disasi has his peak years ahead of him which makes him an ideal target for the Magpies this summer. He would add more quality to the Tyneside club‘s backline and could help them compete across all fronts in the coming years. Thus, Howe should go all out to land Disasi in this off-season.
