In a recent segment on Substack, journalist Simon Phillips stated that Everton midfielder Amadou Onana wants to leave the Merseyside club amid interest from Chelsea this summer. It is understood that the Belgian talent wants to leave the Toffees and is keen on a move to join the Blues in this ongoing transfer window.
Onana’s Season Of Mixed Emotions At Goodison Park
Onana had a difficult campaign at Merseyside recently as he struggled to help Everton be consistent in the Premier League. The 21-year-old registered one goal and a couple of assists in 35 appearances for the Toffees last season in multiple competitions.
The Belgian sensation was one of Sean Dyche’s best performers in the previous campaign based on his average of 2.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.7 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after making 84% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Onana is under contract at Goodison Park until the summer of 2027. However, the Belgian midfield ace wants to leave this summer which could force Sean Dyche to cash in on him in this off-season.
Can Everton Boss Sean Dyche Afford To Lose Onana?
Onana is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can shoot the ball with venom from long range. Onana mainly functions as a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a central defender if told to do so by his manager.
The Belgian sensation can even create some decent chances for others around him in the opponent’s half. However, he needs to add a few more goals to his game in the coming seasons.
Someone with Onana’s quality would no doubt be a big loss for the Toffees this summer. He proved his worth as a reliable performer at Goodison Park last season.
Hence, Sean Dyche simply cannot afford to lose him on the cheap during this summer transfer period. The Everton boss should only allow him to leave if he received a suitable offer for his services.
