In a recent report, The Daily Mirror claimed that Everton are hoping to recruit Manchester United custodian Tom Heaton this summer. It has been mentioned that the Toffees are eyeing a move to land the veteran keeper in this off-season.
Heaton’s Limited Role At The Theatre Of Dreams Last Season
Heaton made just two appearances for the Red Devils in the EFL Cup last season as he often found himself behind David de Gea in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order. However, his contributions ended up helping Man United secure the League Cup earlier this summer.
The English talent has played an important role in ten Hag’s squad despite his limited role at Old Trafford. He has got over 100 Premier League appearances to his name but is entering the final stage of his playing career.
Heaton’s current deal at the Mancunian club is set to run out at the end of next season. Therefore, it makes sense for the Toffees to launch a cut-price move for the experienced goalkeeper before the end of this summer transfer window.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Snap Heaton Up This Summer?
Heaton can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing with confidence on the field. He has got decent reflexes that help him make a few crucial saves at the back. The English footballer is a solid handler of the ball as well but needs to work on improving his ball distribution from the back. Still, there is no denying that the player has got a wealth of experience in top-flight football.
Heaton is still enough to play a valuable role in Everton head coach Sean Dyche’s match-day squad next season. At 37, he might have a couple of years left in him to play at the highest level.
Hence, Heaton would be a good, short-term signing for the Toffees to pull off during this summer transfer window. He might even help the Merseyside club challenge across all fronts in the coming years. Thus, it is only logical for Dyche to snap Heaton up before the start of the new campaign.
However, he is a goalkeeper on the decline and doesn’t have the quality to rival Jordan Pickford for a regular starting spot at Goodison Park in the future.
