In a recent report, AS mentioned that Barcelona have identified Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu as a target for this summer transfer window. It has been claimed that the Catalan outfit are eyeing a move to land the Spanish midfield ace in this off-season.
Romeu’s Solid Run Of Form At Estadi Montilivi
Romeu enjoyed a solid campaign in La Liga recently as he produced a run of dominant performances at the heart of Girona’s midfield. The 31-year-old scored two goals in 36 matches for the Spanish club last season across all competitions.
The Spanish sensation anchored the midfield with conviction based on his average of 2.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 1.5 clearances, 0.6 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in La Liga football. He was also tidy when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.3% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Romeu is under contract at Girona until the summer of 2025. Thus, Barcelona would have to launch a decent offer if they want to recruit him ahead of the new campaign.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Get Romeu On Board?
Romeu is a tough-tackling midfielder who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can make a few energetic runs with the ball as well. The Spaniard has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the opponent’s half but needs to improve his productivity in front of the opponent’s goal.
Someone with Romeu’s skillset will inject a lot of bite and steel into Barcelona head coach Xavi’s midfield. He would even serve as an ideal replacement for Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp.
At 31, Romeu has still got a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Thus, it makes sense for Barca to get him on board on a short-term contract this summer. Romeu already knows La Liga well by now and won’t take any time to settle into life at the Catalan club if Xavi can devise a way to snap him up soon.
