In a recent print edition, Mundo Deportivo revealed that Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet is close to sealing a return to Tottenham Hotspur this summer. It is believed that the French club is close to penning a three-year deal with Spurs in this off-season.
Lenglet’s Solid Loan Spell At The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Lenglet enjoyed a decent loan spell at the North London club in the previous campaign when he managed to produce a run of solid displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The 28-year-old registered one goal and two assists in 35 matches for Spurs last season across all competitions.
The French defensive ace was a rock at the back based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from inside his half after completing 87.5% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Barcelona will run out in 2026. However, the player’s recent loan spell at Tottenham could give Angelos Postecoglu an edge in his attempts to sign Lenglet permanently this summer.
Lenglet Is Close To Joining Tottenham Hotspur Permanently: Good Move For Both Parties?
Lenglet can get stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life tough for the opposition attackers. He can scan the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his team inside his half and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed.
Standing at 1.86m, the Frenchman can use his strong frame to win his fair share of aerial duels for his team. He excels at playing his way out from the back as well.
Hence, it will be a good move for both the player and the North London club to reunite with each other this summer. Tottenham can definitely benefit from signing a centre-back of Lenglet’s skillset permanently in this off-season.
The French defensive ace can also benefit from sorting his future out so that he can concentrate on improving his all-round game on the field. Thus, it makes sense for Spurs boss Angelos Postecoglu to get Lenglet on board ahead of the new campaign.
