In a recent report, Sport revealed that Barcelona have agreed on a two-year deal with Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu. It has been stated that the Catalan club are willing to sign the Spanish midfield ace on a two-year contract with an option to extend it for another 12 months.
Romeu’s Solid Season In La Liga
Romeu had a decent campaign at Girona recently as he was responsible for putting in a run of solid displays for them at the centre of the park. The 31-year-old scored two goals in 36 matches for his current employers last season on all fronts.
The Ulldecona-born talent anchored the midfield relatively well based on his average of 2.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.5 clearances per game in La Liga football. He was even careful when distributing possession from midfield, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.3% in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at the Spanish club runs out in the summer of 2025. Thus, Barcelona will do well to get a deal over the line for Romeu in this off-season.
Will Romeu Be A Good Signing For Barcelona Boss Xavi?
Romeu is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side inside his half. He usually clears his lines when needed and can chip in by scoring and creating a few important goals for his team.
The Spaniard is primarily a holding midfielder but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so by his manager.
We can expect Romeu to add more bite and steel to Barcelona head coach Xavi’s midfield. He has got the experience to help the Catalan club challenge for some major honours over the next couple of years.
At 31, Romeu might still have some time left in him to play at his best. Thus, he would be a good signing for Barca in the short term. Furthermore, the Spanish sensation would serve as an ideal replacement for Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp. With all things considered, Xavi should focus on going all out to get Romeu on board before the end of this summer transfer window.
