In a recent interview with Football FanCast, transfer insider Dean Jones urged Aston Villa to land Barcelona attacker Ferran Torres. Jones said,
“I think the Ferran Torres one could still become interesting. He obviously doesn’t want to leave Barcelona, and it seems like he’s made that pretty clear. But the deeper we get into this transfer window, the more I wonder if he might actually end up leaving.
“I mean, if we get to a situation whereby the season in Spain begins in August, and he’s not in the picture, and you get him towards the back end of the transfer window. I wonder if that’s when Villa might be able to activate a deal like that.”
Torres’ Good Record At Barcelona Last Season
Torres was a decent performer in Barcelona’s squad in the previous campaign when he produced some productive performances for the Catalan club in the final third. The Spanish footballer found the back of the net seven times and secured three assists in 45 appearances for Barca last season in various competitions.
The 23-year-old saw a lot of his game time come as a substitute but managed to catch the eye by averaging 1.2 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in La Liga. He even distributed the ball accurately in the opposition half based on his pass completion rate of 81.2% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Get Torres On Board?
Torres can engineer a yard of space for himself and usually keeps his shots on target. He can be a streaky scorer in the final third when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.
The Spanish can chip in by scoring a few crucial goals for his side but needs to be more consistent with his end product up top. He mainly plays as a left-winger but can also function as a right-sided wide player or act as a centre-forward if required.
Torres would no doubt improve the quality of Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s frontline and help the Villans push for a top-half finish in the 2023-24 Premier League campaign.
He has already got some experience in English football under his belt and is well-equipped to make an instant impact at Villa Park. Thus, it is only logical for Emery to get Torres on board this summer.
