In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, transfer insider Dean Jones claimed that Aston Villa could move in for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer. Jones said,
“The possibility is there if they want to do it. Proposals have been made to various teams in recent times and the terms around it are going to have to be very beneficial towards Villa if this is going to happen.
“I’ve got my doubts about whether they go for it but I can see in a certain moment as this season gets underway why it would be good to have someone like him (Oxlade-Chamberlain) in the squad as a depth option.
“But when negotiating a contract like this it’s going to make sense to have it heavily weighted in terms of appearances to provide motivation for him to play but also to protect themselves from injury issues.
“It was a year ago that he picked up a hamstring injury that left him sidelined for a few months heading into the season, so obviously, you just need to be wary of little things like that. He only played 13 times in all competitions in 2022/23.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Lackluster Season At Merseyside
Oxlade-Chamberlain struggled to give a good account of himself at Liverpool in the previous campaign as he struggled to be consistent with his performances in the Premier League. The 29-year-old featured in just 13 matches for the Reds last season, scoring one goal in multiple competitions.
The English playmaker made most of his appearances off the bench which could be why he only averaged 0.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was a bit careless with his ball distribution after making only 73% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Will Oxlade-Chamberlain Be A Good Option For Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery?
Oxlade-Chamberlain is full of energy and running at the centre of the park. He can shoot the ball with power from long range and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the opponent’s half. However, he has struggled to be consistent with his productivity in the final third and has been prone to injuries throughout his playing career.
Still, there is no denying that someone with Oxlade-Chamerlain’s skillset could be a real asset for a club like Aston Villa. He will bring more energy and dynamism to Unai Emery‘s midfield and could help the Villans challenge for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season.
With all things considered, Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a decent option for the West Midlands club to consider during this summer transfer window.
