In a recent report, Corriere dello Sport stated that Aston Villa are ready to launch a move for AS Roma centre-back Roger Ibanez this summer. It has been mentioned that the Villans are hoping to move in for the Brazilian defensive ace in this off-season.
Ibanez’s Solid Run Of Form In Serie A Last Season
Ibanez enjoyed a decent season under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho at Roma recently and did well to put in a string of solid displays on the defensive end of the field. The Brazilian talent made 48 appearances for the Italian club in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.
The Canela-born defender was a reliable performer at the back as he averaged 2.0 tackles, 2.0 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He was even accurate when distributing possession from inside his half after making 88% of his attempted passes in the Italian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Ibanez’s current deal at Roma will run out in the summer of 2025. Thus, the Villans will have to make a good offer if they want to stand a chance of recruiting the Brazilian centre-half ahead of the new campaign.
Is Ibanez A Good Signing For Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery?
Ibanez is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He can scan the danger quickly and doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed.
The Brazilian centre-back is proficient at playing his way out from the back and can use his robust 1.86m frame to win a few aerial duels. He is primarily a central defender but can also play as a defensive midfielder or as a right-back.
Ibanez will no doubt enhance the quality of Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery‘s defence. At 24, the future looks quite promising for the Brazilian sensation. He has what it takes to help the Villans compete for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season. With all things considered, Ibanez would be an excellent signing for the West Midlands club as long as they can snap him up for a fair price in this off-season.
