In a recent report, Foot Mercato revealed that Arsenal are keeping tabs on Montpellier forward Elye Wahi. It has been claimed that the Gunners could face competition in the form of Newcastle United in the race to land the French striker in this off-season.
Wahi’s Impressive Rise In French Football Last Season
Wahi enjoyed a decent campaign at the French club as he put in a handful of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 20-year-old banged in 19 goals and picked up six assists in 33 matches for Montpellier last season across all competitions.
The French youngster led the line well by averaging 1.9 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the Ligue 1. However, he has to find a way to improve his ball distribution in the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 70.7% in the French top-flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Montpellier is set to expire in the summer of 2025. Thus, it won’t be easy for the Gunners to sign him on the cheap during this summer transfer period.
Arsenal Are Keeping Tabs On Wahi: Is He A Prospect For The Future?
Wahi can engineer a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. He can even create the odd chance for his teammates in the final third. The French starlet is a good dribbler with the ball as well but is still quite raw and would need time to prove his worth at the highest level.
We can expect Wahi to add more firepower to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta‘s frontline. He is already good enough to serve as an ideal backup to Gabriel Jesus at the North London club next season.
At 20, the future looks quite promising for Wahi as long as he continues to improve his all-around game with each season. Thus, the Gunners would be wise to bring him to the Emirates Stadium during this summer transfer window.
There is no denying that Wahi is a prospect to watch out for in the coming seasons. However, he would need time to settle into life in English football if Arsenal manage to win the race for his services.
