In a recent report, Sport claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are close to recruiting Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet this summer. It has been mentioned that Spurs are eager to sign the French talent permanently in this off-season.
Lenglet’s Impressive Loan Spell At North London Last Season
Lenglet enjoyed a decent loan spell at Tottenham after he put in a run of solid performances at the heart of their backline. The 28-year-old found the back of the net once and earned a couple of assists in 35 matches for Spurs last season on all fronts.
The French sensation has been a rock at the back based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 0.7 key passes and 2.6 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from inside his half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.5% in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Catalan club runs out in the summer of 2026. Hence, Spurs will have to pay a good fee if they want to recruit Lenglet permanently ahead of the new campaign.
Is Lenglet A Good Option For Tottenham Hotspur?
Lenglet can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. He usually clears the danger when needed and is a good passer of the ball as well. Standing at 1.86m, the French defensive ace can be a commanding presence in the air but has to figure out a way to be more consistent with his performances on the pitch.
Lenglet is good enough to serve as an ideal squad player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season. He already knows the North London club well after spending most of the last campaign on loan in England.
Hence, Lenglet won’t take any time to settle into life at Tottenham and could help them compete for a top-four spot in the Premier League next season.
At 18, the French talent is about to enter his prime and has got the skillset to be a success story in English football over the next few years. With all things considered, Lenglet would be a decent option for Angelos Postecoglou to consider during this summer transfer window.
