In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo claimed that Real Madrid are open to selling Ferland Mendy this summer. It has been stated that Los Blancos are hoping to cash in on the French full-back during this summer transfer period.
Mendy’s Limited Role At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium Last Season
Mendy played a sporadic role in Real Madrid’s squad last season as he missed a lot of games due to injury. The 28-year-old picked up one assist in 28 appearances for Los Blancos in the previous campaign across all fronts.
The French sensation deserves some credit for averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 0.7 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the left flank based on his pass completion rate of 92.6% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Madrid club will run out in the summer of 2025. Thus, there is no immediate need for Los Blancos to cash in on him in this off-season.
Should Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti Cut Mendy Loose This Summer?
Mendy is a decent tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure possession back for his side inside his half. He usually clears the danger when needed and can create some decent plays for his teammates from the left flank.
The French talent is a good dribbler with the ball as well. However, he has endured an injury-ravaged season in the Spanish capital recently which has put his future at the Bernabeu in doubt.
Mendy currently finds himself on the fringes of Carlo Ancelotti‘s match-day squad. Thus, it makes sense for Real Madrid to cut him loose this summer and bring in a suitable replacement capable of filling his shoes ahead of the new campaign.
At 28, Mendy needs to ensure regular playing time if he intends to get his career back on track. Ancelotti doesn’t have the luxury to offer him such a role at the Bernabeu next season. Hence, it makes sense for both the player and the Madrid club to part ways with each other in search of greener pastures in the future.
