If a report from Dutch outlet 1908.nl (as cited by the Daily Record) is believed to be true, Rangers have tabled a ‘concrete’ offer for Feyenoord centre-forward Danilo. Despite roping in Sam Lammers from Atalanta, Michael Beale is eyeing another ‘number 9’ to add more strength high up the pitch.
The 24-year-old former Brazil youth international progressed through the academy ranks of Portuguesa, Corinthians, Ponte Preta, Vasco da Gama and Santos before being spotted by Ajax back in 2017. He showcased his exquisite scoring ability while on loan at Twente, yet the Dutch giants used him sporadically during the 2021-22 season. Feyenoord secured his services last summer and the Selecao striking ace scored 10 times en route to de Stadionclub’s Eredivisie triumph.
The Gers are exploring an array of new names including Abdallah Sima, Cyriel Dessers and Benie Traore. Danilo is the latest addition to their transfer shortlist and his profile suits Beale’s style of play who prefers a flexible frontline rather than having a targetman to spearhead the attack.
Alfredo Morelos has parted ways as a free agent upon the expiration of his Ibrox contract. The Light Blues have tied down Lammers to restore parity upfront, but their other striking options might not fit in as first-choice given the manager’s free-flowing gameplan.
Why Rangers Must Rope In The Attacker
Antonio Colak was an instant success under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. However, the Croatian struggled to retain his starting status since Beale’s appointment as the Dutchman’s successor. Kemar Roofe had his moments over the years, but the Jamaica international can’t be relied on week in, week out considering his persistent injury problems and fitness concerns. Although Fashion Sakala has featured at times as a second striker, his flair and finesse make him more menacing from the right-hand flank.
Danilo is not the tallest of centre-forwards, but his mobility and movements helped him flourish as a lethal attacker. His passing game, long-range expertise, link-up play as well as finishing attributes should see him succeed under Beale. Feyenoord snapped him up on a Bosman, and therefore, would aim for a significant financial profit if they sanction a summer transfer.
Rangers have spent £3.5m on Lammers. But the likes of Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell and Jack Butland have joined them for free upon being released by their respective clubs. The Glasgow giants are not blessed to spend millions in the market and a lot of groundwork needs to be done by the management to strike a deal for the Feyenoord ace.
