According to a report from Mirror, Manchester United are nearing the completion of agreements to acquire Napoli’s defender Kim Min-Jae and Porto’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa, the latter of whom would displace David De Gea as the club’s primary goalkeeper.
De Gea’s future at Old Trafford is highly uncertain as his contract is set to expire at the end of the ongoing season. After rejecting the initial contract proposal, the chances of him departing the club this summer have significantly increased.
De Gea’s Campaign For Manchester United This Season
The 2022/23 season proved to be a critical one for David De Gea at Manchester United. As the club’s long-standing goalkeeper, he faced heightened scrutiny but less competition. One area where De Gea continued to excel was shot-stopping. His reflexes and agility were evident as he made crucial saves throughout the campaign. He made 38 appearances in the Premier League and kept 17 clean sheets.
According to Whoscored, De Gea had an average of 2.6 saves per match, highlighting his ability to deny opposing teams from finding the back of the net. De Gea also showcased his proficiency when distributing the ball to his teammates as he maintained his composure and precision.
Could De Gea’s Departure from Manchester United be Imminent in the Upcoming Summer?
Discussions regarding De Gea’s future have intensified, leaving fans and pundits speculating about what lies ahead for the Spanish goalkeeper. Regardless of the outcome, his contributions and achievements throughout the season are a testament to his skills and professionalism.
In 2019, De Gea penned a substantial contract that made him the highest-paid player at the club and the highest earner in the Premier League, earning a weekly salary of £375,000. Now at the age of 32, the goalkeeper acknowledges that he may not command the same level of remuneration but still desires a contract that accurately reflects his value.
The Red Devils are reportedly searching for a new goalkeeper this summer, aiming to introduce competition for De Gea’s position and potentially even surpass him as the first-choice option. Diogo Costa is one candidate among the contenders, while the club is also closely monitoring David Raya from Brentford.
However, the Spanish shot-stopper has not agreed with Man United regarding the details of his contract renewal. A refusal to do so could see him exit Old Trafford for free unless Erik ten Hag devises a plan to persuade him into signing a contract extension with them.
