In a recent report, Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claimed that Everton are determined to land Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto this summer. It is understood that the Toffees are eager to secure the services of the Italian talent ahead of the new campaign.
Gnonto’s Impressive Rise At Leeds Last Season
Gnonto enjoyed a decent campaign at Elland Road despite failing to help the Whites avoid the drop from the Premier League. The Italian wide player made 28 senior appearances for Leeds last season, finding the back of the net four times and picking up four assists in multiple competitions.
The 19-year-old deserves some credit for averaging 0.9 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after completing 77% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the West Yorkshire club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Toffees to sign him on the cheap during this ongoing transfer window.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Bring Gnonto To Merseyside?
Gnonto has got the pace to cause a lot of headaches for his marker out on the flanks. He can make some decent runs with the ball and has got the eye to unlock the opponent’s defence with a good pass.
The Italian wing wizard can strike the ball with venom from long range but needs to work on being more decisive in the final third. He mainly operates as a left-sided wide player but can also fill in as a right-winger or play as a secondary striker down the middle if required.
At the moment, Gnonto is playing some of the best football of his young career. At 19, he has the potential to become a future star at Goodison Park.
Hence, it makes a lot of sense for Everton boss Sean Dyche to go all out to bring Gnonto to Merseyside during this summer transfer period. There is no doubt that he will improve the depth of Everton‘s attack and increase competition for places within their match-day squad. Gnonto might even help the Merseyside club challenge for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season.
