In a recent report, Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Chelsea are showing interest in AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer. It has been mentioned that the Blues could face competition in the form of Newcastle United in pursuit of the Italian playmaker in this off-season.
Tonali’s Impressive Form In Serie A This Season
Tonali is experiencing a solid campaign at the Italian club after he put in a string of impressive performances at the centre of AC Milan’s midfield. The Italy international scored two goals and picked up ten assists in 48 matches for the Italian club last season across all competitions.
The 23-year-old has been a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.9 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 0.9 shots and 1.8 key passes per game in Serie A football. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield as he has made 81% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Milan club will run out in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Chelsea would have to pay a big fee if they want to lure Tonali to Stamford Bridge later this year.
Should Chelsea Snap Tonali Up This Summer?
Tonali is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his side at the centre of the park. He usually clears the danger when needed and is a tidy passer of the ball as well. The Italian sensation can shoot the ball with venom and precision from long range but can sometimes lack the pace to make recovery runs at the back.
We can expect someone with Tonali’s skillset to enhance the quality of Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino’s first XI. He is good enough to help the Blues challenge for a top-four spot in the Premier League next season.
At 23, Tonali is about to enter his prime and is well-equipped to make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football.
With all things considered, the West London giants would be wise to snap Tonali up before the start of the new campaign.
