In a recent print edition, El Periódico Mediterráneo mentioned that Aston Villa remain keen on signing Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres. It has been stated that the Villans are trying to convince the player to join his former manager Unai Emery at Villa Park this summer.
Torres’ Solid Campaign In La Liga
Torres is enjoying a solid campaign with the Yellow Submarine as he managed to put in several impressive performances for them on the defensive third of the field. The 26-year-old has been involved in 38 matches for the Spanish outfit this season, scoring one goal in various competitions.
The Spanish defensive ace has given a good account of himself when defending at the back by averaging 1.3 tackles and 4.2 clearances per game in La Liga. He has also been accurate when distributing possession from inside his half, based on his pass completion rate of 85.2% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Torres is under contract at Villarreal until the end of next season. Hence, the Villans would be wise to arrange a cut-price move for him in this off-season.
What Will Torres Bring To Aston Villa?
Torres is a solid tackler of the ball and can make life tough for the opposition when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed and can use his powerful 1.91m to win his fair share of aerial duels.
The Spaniard is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. He has previously worked with Unai Emery at Villarreal and won’t take much time to settle into his brand of football at Aston Villa.
Thus, it makes a lot of sense for the Villans to move in for Torres during this summer transfer window. He will bring plenty of bite and steel to Emery’s defence at Villa Park.
At 26, Torres’ best years are ahead of him which makes him a good choice for the West Midlands club to pursue ahead of the new campaign. Still, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical nature and high intensity of English football if Emery can successfully get him on board soon.
