In a recent report, Het Nieuwsblad claimed that Arsenal are set to rival Chelsea for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. It has been mentioned that the Gunners are eyeing a move to secure the services of the Belgian talent who is unhappy and wants to leave the Merseyside club this summer.
Onana’s Recent Season At Merseyside
Onana endured a tough campaign at Goodison Park but managed to help Everton retain their top-flight lives recently. The Belgian talent participated in 35 matches for the Toffees last season, netting just one goal and grabbing a couple of assists across multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old has anchored the midfield with conviction by averaging 2.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 1.0 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been careful when distributing possession from midfield after making 84% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Onana is under contract at the Merseyside club until the summer of 2027. Hence, Arsenal will have to make a sizable offer if they want to recruit the Belgian midfield ace in this off-season.
Should Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta Move In For Onana?
Onana loves a tackle and can make life difficult for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can spot the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his side in midfield. Onana is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a central defender or as a box-to-box midfielder if needed.
The Belgian sensation can strike the ball with venom from long range and is a decent playmaker in the opponent’s half. However, he has to find a way to improve his productivity in the final third.
Onana has what it takes to add more bite and steel to Mikel Arteta‘s midfield. He is good enough to provide some serious competition for Thomas Partey, Jorginho and Granit Xhaka at the Emirates Stadium in the coming seasons.
At 21, Onana has got the potential to become a future star in the Premier League. Plus, he has already got some valuable experience in English football under his belt and won’t take much time to settle into life at the North London club. All in all, Arsenal should try everything in their power to move in for Onana during this summer transfer period.
