In a recent report, Sky Sports revealed that West Ham United have set their sights on Coventry City forward Viktor Gyökeres. It has been mentioned that the Hammers are eyeing a move to secure the services of the Swedish talent but could face competition from Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers in this off-season.
Gykores’ Excellent Numbers In The Championship This Season
Gykores is enjoying a decent campaign with the Sky Blues as he has produced a lot of influential displays for them in the final third. The 24-year-old has found the back of the net on 22 occasions and grabbed ten assists in 47 appearances for Coventry City this season across multiple competitions.
The 13-time Sweden international has been a consistent performer in the opposition half and performed well to average 3.0 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. However, he needs to improve his link-up play in the final third based on his pass success rate of 68.7% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Coventry City is set to run out in the summer of 2024. Therefore, the Hammers could potentially land him on a cut-price deal in the upcoming transfer period.
Is Gykores A Decent Option For West Ham United Boss David Moyes?
Gykores excels at finding space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has proven his worth as a prolific finisher in the EFL Championship. Furthermore, he has got the eye to set up some inviting chances for others around him on the attacking end of the pitch.
The Swedish striker is usually quite clever with his movements in and around the opponent’s penalty box. Standing at 1.87m, he can use his strong frame to win a few aerial duels as well.
However, Gykores has to find a way to improve his link-up play up top. Still, we can expect him to add some much-needed firepower to David Moyes‘ attack at the London Stadium.
Gykores is good enough to offer some healthy competition for Michail Antonio and would serve as an ideal replacement for Gianluca Scamacca at the East London club. Hence, Gykores would be a brilliant option for the Hammers to pursue this summer.
