In a recent tweet, journalist Florian Plettenberg stated that Barcelona are still hoping to land Manchester City talent Joao Cancelo who will return from his loan spell at Bayern Munich soon. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are showing interest in acquiring the services of the Portugal international this summer.
News #Cancelo: Understand Joao has many options. Barcelona is still one of them. Talks took place. But they can’t push for him at this stage because of their financial situation.
Bayern has taken the decision not to trigger the option to buy. A permanent deal was very unlikely… pic.twitter.com/2Pu81AX9UO

Cancelo’s Impressive Run Of Form At The Allianz Arena
Cancelo has enjoyed a decent loan spell at Bayern as he has managed to help the Bavarian outfit win the Bundesliga title recently. The Portuguese sensation has found the back of the net once and grabbed six assists in 21 appearances for the Munich giants this season in all competitions.
The 29-year-old has been a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.9 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has also been excellent when distributing possession from the flanks, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 85.1% in the top tier of German football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Man City is set to run out in 2027. However, Cancelo might seek a move elsewhere this summer which could open the door for Barcelona to sign him in this off-season.
Is Cancelo A Good Option For Barcelona Boss Xavi?
Cancelo can get stuck in with some crunching tackles to make life difficult for the opposition and can scan the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his team. He usually clears the danger when needed and usually packs a lot of power with shot attempts from long range. The Portuguese talent has got the vision to create a few inviting chances in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball as well.
Someone with Cancelo’s skillset will undeniably be a welcome acquisition for Barcelona as he will enhance the quality of Xavi’s first XI considerably in the coming seasons.
Cancelo is good enough to secure a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp. Plus, he has got the winning mindset to help the Catalan club be more successful over the next few years. All in all, the Man City full-back would be an excellent option for Barca to consider this summer.
