In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Rudy Galetti claimed that Aston Villa have got a concrete interest in Villarreal defender Pau Torres. Galetti said,
“The interest of Aston Villa in Pau Torres is concrete and the English club could soon speed up things for him, considering the fierce competition.
“The Spanish player, whose contract will expire in 2024, in fact, is also followed by some teams in Europe, including Tottenham and Juventus, even if the non-football situation forced the Bianconeri at the moment to put all their evaluation on the market on hold.”
Torres’ Impressive Form In Spanish Football This Season
Torres is experiencing a solid campaign at the Spanish club as he has produced a run of impressive displays at the heart of their defence. The Villarreal-born talent has made 36 appearances for his current club this season, scoring one goal on all fronts.
The 26-year-old has proven his worth on the defensive end of the pitch by averaging 1.3 tackles, 4.1 dribbles and 0.7 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after making 85.3% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Torres Add To Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery’s Team?
Torres can get stuck in with some crunching tackles to make life tough for the opposition attackers. He usually clears the danger when needed and can play his way out from the back. Standing at 1.91m, the Spanish sensation can be a dominant presence in the air as well.
Hence, Torres will be an excellent acquisition for the Villans if they can find a way to lure him to Villa Park this summer. His current contract with Villarreal will expire in 2024 which could open the door for Aston Villa to land him on the cheap in this off-season.
We can expect Torres to add more bite and steel to Unai Emery’s defence. He might even help the West Midlands club push for European football in the Premier League over the next few years. At 26, the Spaniard is about to enter his prime which makes him an ideal choice for Emery to consider in the upcoming transfer window.
